The gateway of my LAN to Internet is a ZyXEL router which can send
statistics and error messages to a UNIX box using SYSLOG. My question
is, how can I configurate syslogd on my linux server to log those
messages on it ?

Try the syslogd man page (man 8 syslogd on my Debian Linux box).

In an unusual turn of events, the man page is well written and
informative. There is a whole section titled "Support for Remote
Logging" that will take you through changes to the configuration file,
which port must be open, and which flag to pass to the syslogd daemon
when it starts.

Don't know about a ZyXEL, but this did it on a CISCO:
1. In the router, turn on logging, set a facility name, and identify the
log host:
====
logging facility local1
logging 216.42.99.195
====

2. On your linux box, in the syslogd.conf, add that facility and where
you
want the output to go. On our box we put it in a separate file:
====
# router stuff
local1.*                               /var/log/router

3. When you start syslogd, add the "-r" parameter so that it accepts
network
logging, i.e.
====
root       770     1  0 Mar24 ?        00:02:43 syslogd -m 10 -r
====

Hope this helps!
