I'm trying to get my Linux box to establish a SLIP connection to Demon,
without much success. In fact I can't even get the modem to dial (although
the lights flicker as if it's receiving something.)
I've been using the DIP utility as supplied with Slackware Linux.
My modem is a USR Sportster 14,400. If anybody has used DIP with Demon
and/or a USR Sportster, I'd be very grateful for any help you could offer.
Somebody did suggest that I might try PPP instead - any suggestions along
that line?
Many thanks!
This is the script file that I've been using:
main:
get $local swmiller.demon.co.uk
get $remote 158.152.1.222
port ttyS1
speed 38400
reset
send ATB0&M4&H1&R2&I0&K3\n
send AT&B1&N0&S1&Y1&D2&C1\n
send ATV1Q0X4&A3E1F1M1\n
wait OK 2
if $errlvl != 0 goto error
dial 01403839666
if $errlvl != 0 goto error
wait CONNECT 60
if $errlvl != 0 goto error
login:
sleep 3
send \r\n\r\n
wait ogin: 10
if $errlvl != 0 goto error
send swmiller\n
wait word: 5
if $errlvl != 0 goto error
send PASSWORD_GOES_HERE\n
wait ocol: 30
if $errlvl != 0 goto error
send slip\n
wait HELLO 30
if $errlvl != 0 goto error
done:
print Connected okay.
get $mtu 576
default
mode SLIP
goto exit
error:
print Failed.
exit:

I'm not having quite the same problem, more that after dialling and getting a connection, at the point where the script ends, the modem hangs up. No apparent reason, it just hangs up the line as soon as it's done. I'm running the standard demon ppp script that comes with slackware 3, so I can't see any problem there, I'm using the same init string that I use with turnpike, which works well enough for me to be able to post this :) but to no avail. I CAN get a connection with (C)SLIP, without it hanging up, but since tunny wells is all Ascends, it's naff all use cos teh don't support (C)SLIP. Anybody got any tips? purrrleeeese? -- Crowley - trying the patience of net users world-wide

Have you made sure that it's not *C*SLIP that you're using? Ordinary SLIP works fine, even with the Ascends. And PPP is'nt hard to install either. :) -Dom

OK, does it drop the line at the bottom of the DIP script or the bottom
of the shell script ("start.dip"). If it's the shell script, try adding
these lines to the bottom and see what comes up:
/sbin/ifconfig
/bin/netstat -nr
If it's the DIP script, I don't know, I'll have to go away and think
about it...
