PLIP between PC and Amiga

I currently have my PC (running Linux) networked to my Amiga (running
AmiTCP) with a serial cable. I'd like to connect them with a parallel
cable. I've looked at the docs for the PLIP drivers on both sides
and the cables seem to be designed differently. Can someone tell me if
the drivers are compatible as is? If so, how do I wire the cable? If
not, what needs to be changed in the drivers? Thanks.

If the Amiga PLIP driver is compatible with the Crynwr (sic) PLIP driver,
then you should be OK. Basically the main difference would lie in
what pins are the status pins--ie. the data pins should be wired the
same on both ends.

As I remember it, there were data pins on one end wired to status pins
on the other, and vice versa. Likely, the status pins are numbered
slightly different on the Amiga end, and thus some minor moving is
necessary. (Either that, or different status pins are available.)

As long as you keep the Amiga_Data -> PC_Status wiring the same,
and can find the appropriate mapping for the PC_Data -> Amiga_Status
wiring, you should be all set. This is of course assuming that
the Amiga PLIP is compatible, which I have no idea about. One thing
worth noting: such a cable would only work when the right ends
were plugged into the right computers. (ie. it'd have distinct
Amiga and IBM ends.)

Best of luck,

Difference is that Amiga PLIP is 8 bit and Linux PLIP is 4 bit. A friend
of mine is working on 8 bit PLIP support for Linux so that this may be
possible. Hopefully he will upload it to sunsite when he is done.

What Joseph was talking about was 4 bit IO, since on a large percentage
of PC Paralell interfaces, the only input is the four status lines.

Recently I've seen interfaces on the PC have the option of input and
output on the paralell lines. Of course the amiga already has it. :)

Amiga PLIP drivers aren't compatible with anything but themselves. If you
want to run Crynwr Mode 0 PLIP, you'll have to write a SANA-II driver for
it. Sad but true.
