smc-ultra module loads but base address changes in ifconfig

I am trying to set up a network and I have an ethernet card with an SMC Ultra chip in it. The module for this card loads fine and I can ping its IP address. dmesg shows that the kernel is using the correct io and irq addresses (10 and 300, pretty standard). However when I run ifconfig it shows the irq base address as 310, not 300! Consequently the networking won't work at all. I have experimented by changing the module to wd (which is sort-of compatible with smc-ultra) but this only made things worse: I started getting kernel error messages "Tx timed out, lost interrupt?". My kernel version is 2.0.36. I don't have any weird hardware (just a sound card but I have tried disabling it and it made no difference). When you cat /proc/ioports and /proc/interrupts they come up with the correct value so I am a bit mystified why the wrong base address is being attached to the interface. I would greatly appreciate any advice... thanks! -- |--------- JEREMY MALCOLM <terminus@odyssey.apana.org.au> ---------| SIG of the day: [ ] Contact [ ] Web [ ] PGP [ ] Taglines #1 [x] #2 "I'm a lawyer." When you say you disabled the sound card, does that mean you tried removing it altogether? if you haven't already done so, run the experiment & try setting up networking with the soundcard removed from your computer. Soundcards are notorious for trying to steal IRQs & address space from other devices. What type of computer is it? In your `/etc/conf.modules` (or /etc/modules.conf, same thing), put
the following lines:
options smc-ultra io=0x300 irq=10
alias eth smc-ultra
Of course you load up smc-ultra with modprobe so the "8390" module is
loaded up automagically as well. You may want to double check that the
jumper isn't on the "Program by Software" setting but on the "Use IRQ 10,
IO 300, Memory D000-D4000, with no ROM Setting" (you know what I mean :).

My SMC8416T won't load without specifying base also, and ifconfig still
gets it wrong, but otherwise it works fine.
Here's my setup: the card is jumpered for "software configured" and has
no boot ROM. The DOS utility has already set it to 0x320, irq 11,
16K memory at 0xd0000. In my rc.modules I uncommented the line that loads
smc-ultra and added io=0x320, i.e. /sbin/modprobe smc-ultra io=0x320. It
loads fine, even though ifconfig reports it at 0x330.
If you look in linux/drivers/net/smc-ultra.c you'll see why ifconfig gets
it wrong:
#define ULTRA_NIC_OFFSET 16 /* NIC register offset from base_addr. */
and further down:
/* The 8390 isn't at the base address, so fake the offset */
dev->base_addr = ioaddr+ULTRA_NIC_OFFSET;
What exactly happens when ifconfig tries to load? Do you get SIO????:
device unknown type messages? If so, just login as root and try modprobe
smc-ultra io=0x300, then modprobe smc-ultra io=0x310, etc. until you see
it identify the IRQ and return the proper valid ethernet address. Then
see if you can manually ifconfig the interface (ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.9
netmask 255.255.255.0 up) and then setup a default route (route add -net
192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0) and finally try to ping other
machines. If it goes that far then you're fine, just edit rc.modules and
add io=0x320 or whatever to the modprobe smc-ultra line.

Huh?! Well maybe the ethernet card is not at fault then - but I've checked out the cabling and the routing and both of them seem fine... the cable is a crossover ethernet cable (I only have two hosts and no hub), perhaps does that not work with the SMC cards? (I can't think why it wouldn't...) Apart from ifconfig there are no other indications that the card is not working - no SIO???? type messages like you mentioned. On the contrary all the diagnostics suggest the card is working, except that I can't ping to it from the other host, and when I try to ping the other host from it the packets are shown going out, but the other host doesn't receive them (even setting the interface to promiscuous, in case I got the routing wrong, which I didn't). Grr. I even tried to borrow a friend's NE2000 but the crossover cable wouldn't fit into it (!!) so maybe I'll have to cannibalise another card from work over Christmas... Which reminds me, MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! -- |--------- JEREMY MALCOLM <terminus@odyssey.apana.org.au> ---------| SIG of the day: [ ] Contact [ ] Web [ ] PGP [ ] Taglines #1 [x] #2 "I'm a lawyer."
