Laptop troubles - Help!

I am trying to fix a 486 Laptop, which is a fairly anonymous and chunky
thing... It is reporting a HDD error (NOT a controller error) and it
cannot see its floppy drive.

I am unable to enter the BIOS setup to change anything - pressing DEL at
the appropriate time does nothing...

On power up - the following BIOS messages are received...

It then asks to press f1 to resume, and hangs on "missing operating
system"

I have checked the AMI site, with no luck... Please advise.
