Hope I'm posting this to the right place, but here goes...

I'm currently playing with Debian testing (woody) with kernel 2.2.19
on a Power Mac 7600/120 (64MB, stock "control" video, 2GB IBM
Ultrastar SCSI drive on the internal bus), and since this machine has
PCI, I decided to see if I could get an old PC video card (an S3 ViRGE
DX based card, fairly well supported in XFree86 3 and 4 on PCs)to
work. However, when I try to start the X server (the build of XFree86
4.0.3 currently included with woody) with an XF86Config made just to
use that card, I get this:

XFree86 Version 4.0.3 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 16 March 2001
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
	reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

---snip---

I notice that if I run X from the console, I get a whole slew of
unresolved symbol errors (XAACopyROP and friends, xf86SetDDCproperties
and xf86InterpretEDID) from s3virge.o just before the segfault.

XFree86 works fine (if slowly) using the Linux framebuffer and
"control". Could it be that this card need some special initialization
before XFree86 can use it? Would it be worth it to invest in a card
(like an older ATI Mach64) with Open Firmware on it?
