Hi ... I am rather new to Linux and have just gotten things running
here. I am running RedHat 6.1 and XFree86 with GNOME. Here is my
dilemma ...
I visited http://linux.3dfx.com to find drivers/X server for my 3dfx
Voodoo3 card. I downloaded the appropriate rpm file and ran the command
that the website told me to run (rpm -Uvh
XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.5-4.i386.rpm). This all went fine and I proceeded
to the next step which is to run XF86Setup to assist with setting up the
X Server.
Now is where I run into trouble. I cannot get XF86Setup to let me
select a 3dfx server which is what this website tells me I need to do
("It's recommended that you run with the 3DFX X server. Other X servers
may work, but there is no guarantee.")
I tried rebooting after I installed the rpm ... still no luck. Please
tell me what I am doing wrong.

The server you're looking for is the SVGA server which has an extension
thingie (gotta love the tech-speak:) for the Voodoo3. In XF86Setup
select the SVGA server and then the Voodoo3 chipset on the chipset
menu. That should be enough. My Voodoo3 3000 AGP also ran well under
the straight forward generic SVGA.

Okay, this didn't do quite what I expected it to ... but then again, I don't
think I made myself 100% clear. I had the card configured under the SVGA
server and it was running okay ... but it wanted to run at 640x480 at 4bpp
(which is unacceptable). This setting caused all the icons (etc.) to be
HUGE! It is impossible for me to work with this setting ... I have trouble
making entire windows fit on the screen, etc. I can't get XF86Setup to let me
change the resolution. I go through and select the new resolution and set it
to 24bpp, save the file, reboot the system and I still am stuck in 4bpp at
640x480.
What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help.
