I like Debian. What I don't like about Debian as a Debian user is the system upgrades too slowly. All the software on Woody is obsolete compared to RedHat 9.0. Releases in Debian occure every couple of years. And I've tried Gentoo, and as a Debian user may I say that Gentoo is unstable. I also have a hard time finding the performance advertized in Gentoo. And it takes me 1.5 weeks to install Gentoo as you have to compile everything you use and thus, when you have an upgrade you end up compiling it all again. 1-2 weeks to upgrade just pisses me off! So, here I am back at RedHat's door with verion 9.0 just to try things out. Usually, I'll try out RedHat's product for a couple of months, get pissed off, and go back to Debian. But not this time. I like RH 9.0 and I've always liked Bluecurve. Don't know if Fedora will support Bluecurve but Fedora is doing the Debian thing here. Their going to have a community of folks build the system. And for those who worry about high quality software, Debian is much higher quality than commerical RedHat is. I bounce for quality here. So, in my opinion, if Fedora's social contract and rules are as strong as Debians, they should have a system where they can produce an extremely high quality distribution. So, here I am, the Debian user and I' fixing to upgrade this RedHat box of mine to Fedora Core 1.0 and perhaps find a new home for myself. Fedora should bring us the girdth of packages found on Debian as well! Fedora uses yum or apt-get just like Debian does, so it's designed for users to upgrade off the internet with ease instead of buring install CD's and screwing with FTP like RedHat made us do. You'd have to crawl over hundreds of websites to get the same functionality with RedHat as you do with Debian. Now, with Fedora they can bring all that super software together in one neat archive, like Debian does, and post an officially tested release for Fedora! All you have to do is apt-get update then apt-get upgrade to stay current. No more checking out 100+ websites for your upgrades as it's will all be in the apt-get repository! No more fighting with new versions as they will already be tested when they go into the apt-get repository. It will be just like Debian only the software will be more modern as the updates will come quicker. And to ensure this, they are using the RedHat base product to start with which Debian must build their own. I'm very hopeful for Fedora and I think all their website partners should create apt repositories to work with the system. I like synaptic and don't think that will work with yum. Yum seems text based. I want to warn them that they should pick one update version or the other, as we shouldn't have apt-get and yum both as this leads to confusion in the marketplace and confusion for the users also. Cut the upgrade mechanism down to one. Thanks
