rpm -ivh command has been hanged up?

hi,
"rpm -ivh command has been hanged up" is not the first time occurring in
my rh80 system. If I use redhat-install-packages to install a new-pkg,
sometimes it was hanged, then i have to kill this app. Afterward, I am
back to use rpm command on gnome terminal to install rpm pkg, it gets
nothing, even rpm -qa | grep [pkg name] gives nothing, and i have to kill
gnome-terminal as well (i can not use [ctrl+c] to back to shell). I dont know how to
refresh this situation unless rebooting system.
Any ideas are highly appreciated.

in situations like this, when you ^c won't kill a running program in a
bash shell, you can try doing:

<ctrl-z>

followed by:

kill %1

(if that's the only job you've got running, otherwise do:

jobs

to tell you what job has what number and then 'kill %2' or 'kill %3' or
whatever the job's number is.)

then do 'fg' and it should come back terminated. another possibility is to
open another terminal and do:

killall rpm

and, if that doesn't work:

killall -9 rpm

however, this will only deal with the running process(es) you want to get
rid of, not stale lock files that you may need to delete and which may be
the original cause of the problem. i don't know anything about rpm lock
files (and i hope i never have to find out!) but somebody else mentioned
them on this ng recently. you'll need to find out what the lock file's
called and where it lives and delete it.

Yes, I have had that happen once. As I recall some files got left in the
/var/lib/rpm directory which bunged things up and needed to be removed.
(like __db files), but my memory is weak right now.
