When starting sshd i get; "Starting sshd: error: Could not load DSA host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key Disabling protocol version 2" This key file does not exist - is it supposed to be created during installation? (I installed using rpm -U) ent.

(I installed using rpm -U) Assuming you're referring to OpenSSH 2.1.x, then see man ssh-keygen. You need to specify the -d option to build DSA keys. I don't know if your RPM was supposed to build the server keys for you - it did when I installed SSH 1.2 from a Caldera RPM, but I built OpenSSH from a tarball. IIRC, the "make host-keys" procedure for the tarball doesn't build DSA keys either and I had to do it manually with ssh-keygen. Best, --- Les [http://www.lesbell.com.au]

Thanks, i had tried that but it looked like it was only for making user keys. Anyway i told it to dump the key to /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key instead of /root/.ssh/whatever and it seems to have worked fine (I can connect remotely using ssh2) Another question tho - what are the pro's and con's of using a passphrase for these server keys? ent.
