Viper 2525 won't read it's writes!

I am having trouble getting an Archive Viper 2525 drive to read it's own
low-density writes under Linux. I don't have any 6525 tapes, so I've
been trying to write/read 6250 tapes... This drive will read archives
written by my old 6150 tape drive, but it won't read it's /own/ writes to
the 6250 tapes after I remove and re-insert the tape (if I don't remove
and then re-insert the tape, it can read the tape until I do so).

What's going on here? I have the non auto-detect-on-insert firmware
revision (this drive doesn't detect tape density on insertion of the
tape, rather, it determines tape density when the first read is attempted).
