Got my video problem solved, getting RPMs downloaded in Windoze, transferred to floppy, and copied into Linux partition after mounting /dev/fd0 -t msdos /mnt/floppy. Got to see Gnome under 3dfx Voodoo Banshee. Cool! (In case others of you with a similar problem are reading this, I found it helpful to shorten filenames to 8.3 e.g. 3dfxsetp.rpm while still in Windows, as the transfer across to Linux loses the hugely long file names -- makes it harder to know what you're looking at). And for awhile I had the sound problem licked. Finally noticed Redhat was saying the chip it detected was "good for many motherboards" (mine AMD K6-2) next to the option it had autodetected. So I stopped trying to tell it I had an SB 16 (which is how Windoze treats it), and changed the IRQ and DMA manually. I was getting my .wav file sound effects in the Gnome interface, if not MIDI. But since then I've been dinking around with NICs, trying to tell Linux I have two ethernet cards, but only the 3com on IRQ 10 is relevant to the internet -- and in the process I lost sound somehow (even though I'm not using IRQ 10 for sound, to the best of my knowledge). This is all familiar territory from fighting with Windows (had to kill PCI Steering to get my video and NICs to stop fighting, or something like that -- based on some obscure "knowledge base" stuff at the MSFT website). I realize my IQ has fallen to about 50 in this new Linux world, given I hardly know anything about where the text configuration files really live, or even how to navigate outside of Gnome (I've been popping up stuff in emacs to take a peek). But I'll be studying all that of course, and plan to offer help to newbies like myself when I'm a little older and wiser someday. Kirby
