I've had a Western Digital 1.2 gig IDE hard drive go bad on a client of mine,
but I believe it was the victim of some sort of electrical storm.

My WD 540 and 1.2 gig drives, on the other hand, have worked like a charm for
quite some time (both were purchased when they were the largest IDE drives
going). I purchased a 2.5 gig WD in mid-May, but the jury's still out, since
the one time I've had to fsck it (due to a system crash), it seemed to me like
there were some hardware errors. I'll have to force an fsck again just to see
what's going on...

Western Digital is very good about replacing broken drives, though, so I may
wind up getting a replacement for the 2.5 gig.
