My employer has approx 380 client sites that were installed
from 1988 to present. I work tech support for them and my
experience with hard drive's is that they last anywhere from
3 to 6 years before failing.

160Mb and 300Mb Micropolis ESDI or SCSI last about 4.5 years.
70Mb and 110Mb IBM ESDI go for about 5 or 6 years.
320Mb and 400Mb IBM RS/6000 SCSI drives last about 5 years.

My home box has a 540MB Fujitsu SCSI drive that started
making noises about 1 month after it turned 5. Any disk
accesses happening when the noise appears causes the
system to freeze for approx 4-5 seconds (waiting on
the disk for i/o). I bumped my ram from 16MB to 32MB
and moved the swap off of it in order to extend what's
left of it's lifespan.

If have a drive that's >6 years old, consider saving up $
for a new one as you'll need it shortly.
