: Is that the same under the root login? If so where do I put those files?
: (I would think that there is already some configuration file somewhere
: because it always loads fortune at bootup and it would not find it.)

If you are using /bin/bash (which is the default) then you want to
create the files .bash_login, .bash_profile and .bash_logout in your
home directory.

: 2. At bootup the kernel would tell me to check my fsck but I see nothing wrong
: with it. It says to do something before the problem becomes fatal. ???

This is probably because you are not initially mounting the partition
read-only when it boots. fsck can't be run on a partition that is mounted
read-write. The answer is to edit your /etc/lilo.conf file and where it
has the entry for the linux partition add a `read-only` entry. Mine looks
like the following.

[ rest of LILO's header snipped ]
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /vmlinux
  root = /dev/hda2
  label = linux
  read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends

Make sure you run LILO after you edit the lilo.conf file or you won't
see any results.

: 3. I finally got Lilo up and running on the MBR of /dev/hda (my Linux
: partition os in /dev/hdb1 because hda has DOS and OS/2 on it). I initially
: tried to get Lilo to recognize my HPFS partition but apparently it didn't
: recognize it and was never mounted. Once I took that statement out it was
: properly mounted and now runs (with just Linux and DOS statements). But
: *again* it didn't run properly -- at bootup it just prints "LILO" and runs DOS
: at the end ouf the timeout. I can't make any choices of what I want to load.

LILO defaults to DOS because that is the first OS you defined in your
lilo.conf file. You can either leave it alone and have to boot Linux
manually by hitting the shift or the control key during the the timeout
period. You will be presented with the Linux boot: prompt.
If you then hit the tab key LILO will print a list of you options.
Type in one and hit return.
If you want to boot Linux by default and not DOS you need to swap the
order of entries in your /etc/lilo.conf file and then rerun /etc/lilo.
This should get you booting Linux by default.

Have no idea if Linux supports the OS2 High Performance File System, but
I think that there is an OS2 FS support option in the kernel config script.
Anybody else know?

: 4. I can't get my X to work. I checked my .xinitrc and XF86Config and I dunno
: what's wrong with them. This is my XF86Config:
: This is what results:

[major snippage]
: SVGA: server for 8-bit colour SVGA (Patchlevel 0):

[minor snippage]
: SVGA: Linear addressing is required for 16bpp

Okay, so which is it? 8 bits per pixel or 16? Not really sure that this
is your exact problem, but it's a good place to start looking. I will leave
this question to someone more experienced in installing X than I.

: 5. If you want to find out what applications you have in your system how do
: you go about doing that? (Currently I just go into each directory and sniff
: them out; once I find it I write their locations down.)

   That's what I've always done.

: 6. Can Linux play .au files? If so does Linux Slackware have an .au player
: incuded? If not where can I find one?

If your kernel has been recompiled to support sound and you have a
compatible sound card then all you need to do is

cat filename.au > /dev/audio

   -Hope this helped some
