Setting up internal network connected to internet

I am trying to set up an internal network (at home) with access to the
internet. This is more of an exercise for my interest rather than an
attempt to do something serious.

I am using two Linux machines connect via plip. One of these machines
also has a PPP connection to my ISP. I can successfully connect the two
machine using PLIP, and while this connection is up I can access the
internet via PPP from the machine with PPP set up.

What I can't do is access the internet from the other machine using the
PPP machine as a gateway. Any tips.

So far I have the following

Main machine (desktop)

PPP connection using dip. IP address 158.152.3.4 pointopoint 158.152.x.y
(I can't remember the real one at the moment.)

ifconfig plip1 10.0.0.2(desktop) pointopoint 10.0.0.1(laptop)

Secondary machine

ifconfig plip1 10.0.0.1(laptop) pointopoint 10.0.0.2(desktop)

I can ping desktop and can even access my apache server on it, bt I
can't get beyond it.

I have tried setting up some static routes - some of them refuse to be
set (saying network unreachable) while others are set up but don't allow
any communication.

Among the routes I have tried are

route add -net 158.152.0.0 gw 10.0.0.1

route add -net 158.152.0.0 gw 10.0.0.2
route add -host 10.0.0.2 gw 10.0.0.1
route add -host (demon dns server on the 158.152 network) gw 10.0.0.2
route add -host (158.152.x.y (the other end of my PPP link) gw 10.0.0.2

I think I have covered most of the combinations of the above.

Is what I am trying possible? If so what I am doing wrong?

TIA
