Thanks Anthony, and to others who responded, including Michael who emailed me
but to who, because of this problem, I haven't replied to directly.

I'm using sendmail.  Taking clues from all your comments, I've hunted through 
all the logs and found mail status=Deferred for outgoing mail, with a 
hostname lookup failure against post.demon.co.uk (Demon's mail host) - which 
surprises me because the same host handles postings like this.  Local copies 
of email addressed to myself are always delivered.

I must now look through my setup to see why the lookup failure is occurring.
If anyone can help short-cut this process, I will be interested to hear.
