  Heh, this sounds like what I've done to my 386 laptop with 2 megs of RAM.
:)  First off, go to following URL:

If you go to that page there is a 2 disk install set that can install in
896k of RAM (I think).  Now, this set should get you booted.  Then, compile
a minimal kernel on your main box, install it on the laptop, and you should
be fine.  I'm currently running a 2.0.30 kernel on my laptop, with about
2200k of my 2600k available after the kernel boots.

  Now, I have a quick suggestion for this laptop.  You could use it as a
dumb serial terminal to your main Linux box.  This is what I use mine for. 
If you do this, you will definitely have to compile a new kernel, this one
with ELF support.  Then, just copy ld.so.conf, ldconfig, and the shared
libraries you'll need, and a communications program.

  Incidentally, with the minicom, a few shared libs, joe (an editor), and a
couple of other programs, I've got Linux installed in 7 megs of HD space. :)
