we need to find a plain text, (ascii file), for the detailed information
on mgetty. during the installation process, mgetty tried to create a file
mgetty.info but it failed.
we are trying to setup an incoming serial line to an
external USR Sportster 14.4 modem. we see "respawning too fast" errors
and the error message on the console says...
Dec 13 01:21:49 ASARian mgetty[3914]: init chat failed, exiting...:
Invalid argument

ps -aux | grep mgetty says...
root 3872 0.0 2.3 55 352 ? S 01:16 0:00 \
/usr/local/sbin/mgetty -x3 -s 38400 ttyS1
and the line in /etc/inittab reads...
we tried both agetty and mgetty and both failed to setup?
# Dialup lines
# not sure of this either... this is supposed to be a dialin line
# on the second modem, (/dev/ttyS1, irq=3, IO=0x02f8 UART=16550a).
# but init kept saying respawning to fast, so we took it out.

ideally we would like the prompt to read like the telnet prompt does...
agetty sends:
Linux 1.2.13 (ASARian.org) (ttyp0)
ASARian login:
we'd like mgettys prompt to be:
Linux 1.2.13 (ASARian.org) (ttyS1)
or
Linux 1.2.13 (ASARian.org) (cua1)
ASARian login:
which ever is the correct device for incoming calls.
we appear to be missing a config file of some sort, we don't
know whats expected in the "chat" that mgetty is complaining about.
agetty works fine for the VCs and 1 dedicated vt220
# Serial lines
# this is a dedicated vt220 on a STB 4port on a null modem cable
# /dev/ttyS4 irq=10 io=0x01a8 UART=16550a (setup with setserial).
# agetty -i suppresses the /etc/issue [scrolls too slowly, line noise]
#
s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -i 19200 ttyS4 vt220
