Hello First boring history then questions. I am just starting out with Linux again. Tried it about four years ago and got nowhere as there was not any good productivity software available and had never heard of the Internet. Been reading all the hype about how easy Linux is to use today so decided to try again. I purchased Caldera Base 1.2 because it had Star Office. The package loaded OK except XF86Setup would not setup my S3 Trio card and had to use X86configure. Star Office looked to be quite usable except I read in a Linux newsgroup that it only prints to a postscript printer. I also read about KDE and purchased Mandrake 5.1 (cheap $4.95) just to see it on my own screen and liked it. (a RH 5.1 dist 2.0.35 Kernel) Questions start here. Is it true that Star Office will only print to a postscript printer?? If so I guess I just wasted $89.95. The Kernel in Caldera is 2.0.33) which will not allow me to read my WIN95 partition where I downloaded the KDE package from Caldera. Error from mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win95 is vfat not supported in this kernel. Any way around this problem?? I would like to get the free upgrade to Caldera 1.3 since it comes with the KDE interface but I live in Australia and the nice things that the US customer gets never get here. I tried to run the Setup program for Star Office from the Caldera on dist on the the Mandrake (RH 5.1) system and got an error that it was unable to run setup. Any way to run the SO setup from Caldera on RH?? Long message but am looking for help Thanks on and all. Art Any way to use the

If you are using OSR2 then you need kernel 2.0.35. You need to upgrade your kernel to 2.0.35 if you want your Linux to be able to read Fat32 partition. >I would like to get the free upgrade to Caldera 1.3 since it comes >with the KDE interface but I live in Australia and the nice things >that the US customer gets never get here. LSL Australia (www.lsl.com.au) will have Caldera 1.3 next week. They also have Caldera OpenLinux Lite v1.3 on CDR ( 2 CD/set ) for $8.95. This v1.3 comes with kernel 2.0.35 so it will fix your problem. It also comes with StarOffice 4 included in the CD. KDE is also included. Glenn Tesla

No such thing as wasting money on Linux!! There's always another way of doing things in this great OS. You'll find that most software prints only in postscript. You can use Ghostscript (which you probably already have) to take the postscript and covert it into something your particular printer understands. Look into a majic filter that will take all different types of files and tell ghostscript how to handle it. This makes for a very usable printing system, for instance, I can print something from star office in postscript and a few seconds later my Canon BubbleJet is printing it. For particulars on how to set it up look at the printing howto, http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO.html. Also many new distributions make it very easy to set up printers. Redhat comes to mind, you can set up a printer through the control panel, but I don't know about Caldera. Good luck. - Jon-Paul > The Kernel in Caldera is 2.0.33) which will not allow me to read my > WIN95 partition where I downloaded the KDE package from Caldera. > Error from mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win95 is vfat not supported in > this kernel. > Any way around this problem?? > I would like to get the free upgrade to Caldera 1.3 since it comes > with the KDE interface but I live in Australia and the nice things > that the US customer gets never get here. > I tried to run the Setup program for Star Office from the Caldera on > dist on the the Mandrake (RH 5.1) system and got an error that it was > unable to run setup. > Any way to run the SO setup from Caldera on RH?? > Long message but am looking for help > Thanks on and all. > Art > Any way to use the -- Excellent day for putting Slinkies on an escalator.

I've never used Star Office, but most programs tend to be postscript only under Linux. Assuming your printer is supported by ghostscript you should be able to set up a filter to convert postscript to your printers language. There are progs with names like magic-filter that do this sort of thing automatically. Have a look around the printers dir on sunsite. cya -- Steven Blunt spblunt@ozemail.com.au http://enterfornone.simplenet.com/

While it may produce only PS output, that doesn't mean you're stuck. None
of hte other office packages for Linux (except for maybe Word ImPerfect
which I have not seen in its LInux incarnation) also produce only PS.
What it DOES mean is that you need to use the printer setup tools u nder
the GUI to set up Ghostscript and the print spooler to tell it about
what your printer really is. When I did it, told it about my Canon BJC
printer and it works just fine.

Probably can be dealt with by a kernel rebuild. Should not be difficult
at all, once you find the instructions for doing that. I don't recall if
they are in the Caldera manual or not, but they do provide extensive online
help (with links to additional web-based help), so you should be able to
find the gory details.

Applications</H1></CENTER>
For now this section will just be some notes about odd things I've run
into while running various applications. To be expanded later.
<H2>
KLyX </H2>
( <A HREF=3D"http://www-pu.informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/users/ettrich/klyx=
/klyx.html">http://www-pu.informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/users/ettrich/klyx/=
klyx.html</A>
)
<BR>The first time I ran KLyX, I started following the Tutorial. I tried
to view the Tutorial with File -> Preview -> View DVI. Well, it worked,
but it had to run through about 1500 fonts, apparently it was creating
them right then. Good thing I used my trick of starting X programs from
the terminal in the background. I ran KLyX like this:
<P><TT>[user]$ klyx &</TT>
<P>This allowed me to switch to the terminal and read the output of the
program so I could tell what was going on. Otherwise I would have been
just staring at the little clock and wondering if the program was locked
up. It wasn't, and after more than 5 minutes it finished what it was doin=
g.
(Meanwhile I popped open Netscape Composer to make this note.) Happily,
this only happens the first time you use the dvi viewer on a document.
The next time it took only a couple of seconds to view the document, even=
after closing the application. However, when I tried it on another (much
shorter) document, it went through the whole font thing again. Apparently=
this is normal, but it's annoying. The longer the document, the longer
it takes to do this.
<P>Later I discovered that in my version (0.9.6) the File -> New menu opt=
ion
doesn't work right, so I gave up trying to use it for now. There is an
update 0.9.7 version, which I downloaded but haven't had time to install
yet. I may not bother since my S.u.S.E. Linux distributions came with LyX=
(the original on which KLyX was based) on the CD. It uses Xforms rather
than Qt, but if it works, I'm happy.
<H2>
kppp</H2>
( <A HREF=3D"http://www.kde.org">http://www.kde.org</A> )
<BR>Keeps reporting that the "lock" option is enabled in /etc/ppp/options=

even though it has been commented out. I gave up and just removed the wor=
d
"lock" from the file and the message stopped popping up.

Netscape</H2>

The Red Hat rpms install Netscape in /usr/lib/netscape instead, and Netsc=

To correct the problem you need to export an environment variable called
MOZILLA_HOME containing the actual path where Netscape lives. This can
be done in /etc/profile to cover all users, or in ~/.bash_profile for spe=
cific
users. On Red Hat systems you could also add this line to the <I>top</I>
of /usr/bin/netscape, the script used to start Netscape.
<P><TT>[user]$ export MOZILLA_HOME=3D/usr/lib/netscape</TT>

Very cool program, without doubt, <I>IF</I> you can get it installed. Tho=

of us using Red Hat 5 and up (or any other distribution based on glibc
instead of libc5) have to jump through some nasty hoops to get this thing=
installed. Just follow the installation instructions that come in the pac=
kage,
they're pretty thorough and the setup is actually quite easy. Basically
you untar the package and run a script called setup.
<P>Trouble is if you're using Red Hat 5 you'll get a bizarre error when
the setup begins that reads something like "Script Error line 1: Syntax
error at token 'l' expected declarator, i.e. file...". I searched the 'Ne=
t
for hours before I found an answer to this one. The message lies, there's=
actually nothing wrong with the script at all. The problem is that some
of the libraries required by the setup.bin aren't available. Here's how
to fix it. Change to the office setup directory and run this command:

<P>The command gives you a list of libraries that are required to run the=
program. On the left is the library that setup.bin wants. On the right
is the file on your system that's doing the job. If any of them say "not
found" or something like that, you've found the problem. The most likely
culprits are libc.so.5 and libm.so.5. Red Hat includes older versions of
these libraries in it's 5.x distributions. If that's what you're missing,=
download the libc-5.4.??.bin.tar.gz from UNC's sunsite or one of it's mir=
rors.
( http://sunsite.unc.edu ) You'll probably find it under /pub/Linux/GCC/,=
but look for the GCC directory in any case. You'll need to get 5.4.22 or
higher.
<P>Once you've got the package, untar it into the /tmp directory. I can
never remember the syntax for tar, so check the man page (type <TT>=
man
tar</TT>). Since I have KDE installed I always use kzip, a most handy uti=
lity
that takes all the work out of it. Once you have the archive unpacked,

the ldd command again. If it still reports missing libraries, go back and=
check your work, you missed something. If it doesn't, you have only one
step to go. Issue the command env or printenv. This will print a list of
the current environment variables. Look for one called LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
Make sure it contains /lib. If it doesn't, or if you don't see it:

<P>Now you can run the setup script per the instructions, no more errors.=
(Don't forget to type <TT>./setup</TT> to run the one in the current dire=

Otherwise you'll start the Red Hat setup utility in /usr/sbin !) Good Luc=
