My First Install - InfoMagic CD with RedHat Kernal 2.0.27 - Can I upgrade?

Hi all,

Apologies for what is probably a regular question.

I've got a copy of the InfoMagic Developer Resource CD, which comes
with Red Hat 4.1 (kernel 2.0.27 I think). How much work would be
involved in upgrading to the latest kernel after this install
(assuming I can FTP all the required bits). Does this sound
masochistic? Has anyone tried this before?

Any pointers much appreciated

Ciao

I wouldn't waste my time. RH4.1 to RH5.0 or at worst 5.1 is a
major change (libraries etc...). You are better getting RH5.0
(5.1 has some qirks that I found annoying so I when back to 5.0).

As you don't state what your h/w is, you may find that if you
have new h/w that 5.0 or 5.1 is a must, otherwise you will have
to patch and recompile your kernel. If you want to know what patches
apply have a look at http://www.linuxhq.com

The stable kernel release presntly stands as 2.0.35+ soon to goto
2.0.36. Know problems that you may encounter are:
ne2k ethernet cards, IDE hd issues, pppd.

If you are only a newbie, I would strongly suggest getting
RedHat 5.0. Its stable, and very easy to install.
