Hi, After hour of playing around with RedHat 5.1, I thinks I have mastered configuration of the following running on the one machine: ip masq autodial to isp with ip-masq sendmail fetchmail samba wu-ftpd telnetd However, I now want to make the machine more secure. What I would like to do, it start with a fresh installation of RH 5.1, but ONLY install the bare minimum to have the system running (the above plus basic file utils and a text editor). I do not wish to have a compiler on the system, as for the near future anyware, I will trust the RPM will suit my needs for software installation. When I try and install from the CD / FTP Archive, the smallest installation I get is around 95MB. Would anyone be kind enough to get me started as to how I can make my installation with the bare minimum of files please? Look forward to hearing from you, Darren

Selecting individual packages might bring that down to about 80MB. You may as well let it run through the installation at that size, then go back and take out what you don't want. Some things are _always_ installed initially, like it or not, but can be removed later. Do an rpm -q -a to see which rpm's you've got, and then do rpm -q -i <package> to get info on each one, and decide whether it's something you're going to need. rpm -e the ones you're sure you can do without. If you're hellbent on minimalism, you might wipe out large amounts of docs and stuff like that as well. -Dan -- Dan 'Shag' Birchall, Moorestown, New Jersey. Spam delenda est. You could check the list of installed rpm's in your 95MB installation with 'rpm -qa | sort | more'. To get more information about an installed rpm, just ask it like 'rpm -qi wu-ftpd-2.4.2b17-2'. To get a list of files included an installed rpm ask it 'rpm -ql wu-ftpd-2.4.2b17-2'. To query in which rpm a file is included, do it like 'rpm -qf /bin/tcsh'. To remove an installed rpm do it like 'rpm -e wu-ftpd-2.4.2b17-2'. After deleting nonsense rpms create a list of installed packages as 'rpm -qa | sort > mysetup.txt'. To make it easier for the next equal setup, create a kickstart setup file. Never had time enough to make a kickstart config file, but like to hear more information, if someone has it. If you really want minimal, see the linux-on-one-floppy: http://www4.pisoft.it/~andreoli/mulinux.html It is a good example of a small system, and includes e-mail, a web browser (lynx), ... For a gateway/router, you dont need a hard disk. -- Mike Holland <mike@golden.wattle.id.au> Perth, Australia. Of the sparkling wines, the most famous is "Perth Pink".
