Hi all, I am very new to Linux, and jhave just finished installing Red Hat Linux 3.3 (??). I want to set up my computer to log into my Internet account at Enternet.com.au. Which program/s do I use to start TCP/IP, dialing, and to load Netscape, either in X Windows or standalone? I also want to buy a laser printer, either a HP 6P or a 6L. Which one is better? The 6L retails here in Aus for about $680, while the 6P is about $1100. The 6L is good value $$$ wise, but it take valuable cycles from the CPU. Have anyone had any experience with either of these printers? Alao, I need a good X server setup instruction. I have the O'Reilly & Associates "Running Linux" and the Sams Publishing "Linux Unleashed" but both were printed in 1996. Any advice to set up X would be much appreciated. Finally, I would like to update my Linux distribution. I have Red Hat 3.0.3 running, but I assume there is a later release. I have heard of 4.2 or something like that on the newsgroups, so I assume that is the latest. What is the best method of upgrading -- either via the Net or buying a CD set? I run a 150MHZ Pentium, 500MB Linux partition (another 500MB is standing by if I need it), 32MB RAM, and a 6x speed CD. I use a 33.6kbps modem to connect to the Net, and currently use Windoze 95 as my primary OS. Any help would be much appreciated, especially by email, as I dont have much time to puruse newsgeroups. Thanks in advance, Richard Main :-) Sydney, Australia rmain@enternet.com.au

You want pppd for that: see the ``PPP HOWTO'' which is posted
regularly to
<URL:news:comp.os.linux.answers>
recently as:

Yup. Just bought a 6L which works quite well with the LaserJet4
device of both groff and ghostscript.
While the latter certainly takes up more CPU cycles than printing
PostScript direct to the [6P] printer would, it's certainly not an
unberable load.

There isn't really much involved with setting up an X server other
than creating the correct config file for your hardware and XFree86
now comes with a nifty GUI configuration program to do most of that.
The ``Linux XFree86 HOWTO'' (posted to c.o.l.answers) should help:

CD's are a fairly cheap and convienient way to get an entire
distribution, plus generally a whole bunch of other goodies.

You use a program called 'pppd' and 'chat' to connect up to the Internet,
'netscape' is available for X Windows of course, and 'fetchmail' will
download e-mail from your pop account.
If enternet has a weird setup that requires PAP, you may have to setup
your secrets file in a special 'weird' format, which is simply login name
on first line, and password on the next. This shouldn't be a problem with
most standard ISP's though.
All of this information may be found in the ISP-Hookup-HOWTO, which is
available from ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/.

HP's are good for Linux use. People have reported that 6P's work.

Just install a window manager, fine tune your configs (the defaults should
be fine) and your laughing.

You /can/ upgrade via the Internet, although it will be tiresome and slow.
Get a CD rom and upgrade all your old RPMs.. The later versions have a
much better configuration utility, that should really help you setup X.

You might then be interested in DOSEMU, which emulates DOS under Linux, or
WINE that can run Windows programs under Linux.

I've sent this to your e-mail as well, hope it helps!

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies
the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry
penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more
careful about what they say if they had.
