-- Hi there, I just wonder if it's possible to run Apache and the CGI deamon on a standalone linux box? Right now I haven't finish configuring the pppd, but I want to run Apache so that I can test my webpages, is it possible? Thanks a lot Chris Q : What's the output of "rm -rf *"? However you must run a DNS since Apache (and other httpd's) need to be able to find hostnames there. I run my own domain and IP net. This I keep from the outside world by masquerading. So, you see, there is a fair bit of setup to do. I've not found a simpler way to do this. Cheers pfb

If you can successfully ping localhost you should be alright. Cheers Howard Connellan (howard@hobace.demon.co.uk)

Peter, There is a simpler way... I, too, run apache locally... I've got one 95/NT and one 95/Linux box talking to my "server" which is a dedicated linux box. Using the ever-famous non-routable 192.168.1.1,.2,and 3 for the three IP addresses and using only /etc/hosts (and LMHOSTS on the MS boxes) for proper name resolutions. No problems pulling pages off of http://192.168.1.3/ or http://my.hostname.org (Well, it IS a private network...) Anyhow, just wanted to point out that the hassle of named and a full DNS configuration is by no means necessary for a simple stand-alone server (or even intranet) application. However, for non-local links or more secure rarp lookups, then you would need either another interface (I have my 95/NT box connect to TCP/IP both locally over ethernet, and remotely over its own modem) or an outbound pppd/dip connection from the linux box to map to another DNS nameserver, or local named. But, for STRICTLY local access to only local links, no headache is necessary... --Kevin Peter F Bradshaw <pfb@goldmund.nixltd.com.au> wrote in article <5phn0l$o93$1@disco.iinet.net.au>... > In article <33BC5864.91F89DE8@student.monash.edu.au>, > Chris Yuen <khyue1@student.monash.edu.au> writes: > >-- > >Hi there, > > > >I just wonder if it's possible to run Apache and the CGI deamon on a > >standalone linux box? This is exactly my setup aswell, and if you are interested i mirror
some of the ipmasq pages on my machine if Peter is interested in
setting it up. Masqing is great and takes a lot of hassle out of
other problems.

I run apache and squid on my linux box which is the gateway out to the
net for my win95 machine(s) which are also 192.168.1.x designated.
Have fun

I've been running Apache and NO DNS for months. Use a hosts file for
whatever machines you have.

I just use the IP to connect to Apache. Even when I am connected to the Net (via cable modem) I just use the IP to view my stuff from the outside (or telnet, ftp, etc.).
