I have a problem installing LINUX on the same disk as WinNT Workstation 3.51 (I'd appreciate an answer by email if possible) My set up is: drive 1 130Meg - devoted totally to DOS drive 2 1.7Gig partitioned as follows: 500meg EXT2 partition for LINUX 800meg NTFS partition for Win NT 300meg DOS partition 100meg LINUX Swap WinNT is installed on 2nd partition When the system boots the WinNT OS Loader gives a menu allowing boot of MSDos (on drive 1) or WinNT on 2nd partition of Drive 2. I attempted to install Red Hat from Infomagic's CD ROM - it went perfectly until the last step, installing LILO onto the 1st disk, failed. So I tried to install LILO onto a floppy - that failed as well. So I tried to install Slackware from the same set of CDs. That went through without hitch. LILO appeared to install on the 1st drive, and I made a boot floppy. However when I boot off the first drive the same WinNT menu comes up as before, as if LINUX's LILO had not been installed. (There is no option to boot LINUX.) I could boot off the LILO floppy, and used the command: mount root=/dev/hdb2 ro which booted up LINUX. After that everything worked (almost) perfectly. So now I have the situation where I always have to use a boot floppy to boot Linux which is a bit inconvenient. Is there someone who has had similar experiences of the above problems, i.e. what the hell went wrong with Redhat, and why doesn't Lilo seem to work with WinNT? p.s. a few more questions for some patient person: - fdisk/mbr copies an 'old' copy of the MBR to the MBR where is this old copy stored, and who or what puts it there and when? - before installing Linux, I actually tried fdisk/mbr to see what effect it would have on WinNT's boot manager menu, and, surprise, surprise, it had no effect. (I expected to see the NT manager disappear and take me back to plain old DOS boot.) Any idea why this happened? Regards, and thanks in advance, Colin Newell col@mega.com.au -- col@mega.com.au
