Hi, I am going to install Linux along with Win95 on my PC. Currently, I have Win95 running on a Quantum 850. I bought an IBM 1.7G HD yesterday. I want to set aside 800Mb for Linux and the rest for Win95, i.e. (Currently in use) Quantum 850 Mb --> Win95 (Not yet formatted) IBM 1.7 Gb --> Win95 (900Mb) / Linux (800Mb) I have bought the book "Linux Unleashed" (Sams, 1996), but it tells you only how to install Linux using DOS. What's worse is that it says nothing about partitioning a Large EIDE hard disk. Currently I use Ontrack Disk Manager (DM) to overcome the DOS limitation of 504Mb. I have checked "Linux Large Disk mini-HOWTO". The Linux I've got supports Ontrack DM. Unfortunately it does not say exactly how I should proceed with the DM. Should I partition the 1.7 Gb using DM? Will that affect my data on Q 850? Thank you for your help. Lawrence Cheung M. Phil. Candidate in Linguistics English Dept., CUHK

You can keep the old harddisk without re-partitioning. However, you can
use LILO instead of DM. After you install the root disk, you
can use fdisk to change the partition configuration. It's easy and safe,
quite straight forward. If you need to cut DOS partition, fips.exe is
included in the CD-ROM of Linux Unleashed. Just check it out.

You can partition the 1.7 GB drive using DM, but, unless you have a
really old version of DOS, there's really no point in doing so, as
DOS has already got over with the 504 MB limitation a long time ago.

I came across such problem. What I have is an old 486dx33, 8Mb RAM and a Seagate 2G hd with DM installed. After try several methods, I "try to give up" by doing the fdisk in the Linux Slackware 3.1 rootdisk --- color.gz (or may be in the bookdisk, anyway, from one of the two disks that you must insert during installation of Linux). At the fdisk prompt, using "n" to create 9 partitions, the first one is about 250M for dos (I use the "t" command to change the partition type to DOS>32M type, it works at least up to this moment!), the second one is about 500M for Linux native, the third one is 30M for Linux Swap, other 250M partitions also for DOS>32M types, although I have no Win95, I think I can install one on these DOS>32M partitions later). And I have tried to resize the other DOS partitions to 500M without any problems. Now the Linux is installed with recognition of all the DOS>32M partitions, each time I can boot from DOS and then using the LOADLIN utility to enter Linux without any problem. Believe me or not, a 170M Conner Hd even coexists with the Seagate 2G HD. Such Conner is /dev/hda1, Seagate is /dev/hdb1,2......9. So actually I an boot the dos from the Conner. But it should be OK if I removed the Conner, because I have bootable-formatted my first DOS partition on the Seagate drive. (By-the-way, I found that Conner can only be Master if living together with Seagate HD, but who care?) Hope this helps you James

DOS uses the BIOS to determine the disk geometry and most older BIOS's have 504MB (1024 cylinder) limit. Refer following FAQ pages: http://thef-nym.sci.kun.nl/~pieterh/storage.html http://www.wi.leidenuniv.nl/ata/ Linux kernel does not rely on the BIOS (but boot loaders do) so Linux will not need OnTrack or fancy BIOS. However if you have >1024 cylinder DOS/Win95 partitions, then you will need to have either modern BIOS or some type of Software tricks like OnTrack.
