My parallel port has stopped working! It used to work. The only thing which has changed is that I installed a Dlink DE-220 ethernet card. The problem's not the kernel, because the unpatched kernel I used previously doesn't work now either. It's not a hardware problem, because the parallel port works okay if I boot the PC under Windows 95. My first thought was that it was an IRQ or memory address conflict. However I've tried the ethernet card under two different IRQs (9 and 11) and three different base addresses (0x280, 0x300 and 0x340) and it makes no difference (except when I tried IRQ 3 it disabled the serial port as well.) My PC is a Pentium 120 running Redhat 4.1, kernel 2.0.27 with ne2k-pci-diff patch. The current IRQs and addresses are: $ cat /proc/interrupts 0: 15164 timer 1: 303 keyboard 2: 0 cascade 4: 786 + serial 5: 1 sound blaster 9: 1 NE2000 13: 1 math error 14: 29540 + ide0 15: 0 + ide1 $ cat /proc/ioports 0000-001f : dma1 0020-003f : pic1 0040-005f : timer 0060-006f : keyboard 0080-009f : dma page reg 00a0-00bf : pic2 00c0-00df : dma2 00f0-00ff : npu 0170-0177 : ide1 01f0-01f7 : ide0 0220-022f : sound blaster 0280-029f : NE2000 02f8-02ff : serial(set) 0376-0376 : ide1 03c0-03df : vga+ 03f0-03f5 : floppy 03f6-03f6 : ide0 03f7-03f7 : floppy DIR 03f8-03ff : serial(auto) (The DE-220 card appears as NE2000.) From the Windows settings, I expect the parallel port to appear at addresses 0378-037a, but it's not detected. There's no relevant message in dmesg, but there never was even when it was working. Any suggestions, please? If possible please reply to the email address below as well as to this group. Thank you Rod Tye rdtye@iee.org

I'm currently running kernel 2.1.126-pre2, with a modular parallel port driver. parport0 only appears in /proc/ioports while the module is loaded. Are you sure that you're not in a situation where your parallel port driver is failing to load when required? (I'm not sure whether the latest way of handling parport stuff was in 2.0.27.) >Any suggestions, please? If possible please reply to the email >address below as well as to this group. If I must, though I dislike people setting non-functioning From: addresses and then asking for replies even more than I dislike people expecting to get replies by mail in response to news... Not as such [it isn't in my 2.0.35] but the lp modules _does_ auto-load on my system [when ppa isn't loaded] so this could indeed be the problem. Try doing an 'insmod lp' before trying to print and see what happens. A believe the 2.1 kernels [and the nearly-here 2.2 ones, of course] use a different methodology when it comes to parallel ports. -- David James Spillett Ageing is compulsory DJSpillett@bigfoot.com Maturing is optional... http://www.djspillett.demon.co.uk (home of WholeSite v1.51, the one-click web-site updater. Oh, and some strange humour...) Ahah, that did the trick. When I was recompiling the kernel I must have blown away the /lib/modules/2.0.27 directory. Restoring it fixed the problem. Thanks very much to both of you for your help. Rod Tye. rdtye@iee.org
