login logs me out!

I'm sure I'm doing something stupid...

When I'm logged in, say as david, and I login as another user, or root
the shell is killed and if I'm in a virtual console I get the login
prompt, or if it's a shell window in X the window disappears.

This happens whichever user tries to login as another, but su and 
su <username> work ok.

Any Ideas?
