sndconfig

Folks,
I've recently installed RH5.2, totally successfully, including sound
functionality. However, for various reasons I've just had to carry out a
complete reinstall :(

I'm now suffering from a lack of success with the sndconfig utility. I
have an old AWE32 Value, set up at:
    IRQ 7
    DMAL 1
    DMAH 5
    MPU 330

I emphasise, it *has* worked under RH5.2 with these settings (even last
night!) but now reports an error when attempting to play Linus' famous
'Leenix' sample...;) The error goes something like 'Error accessing
/dev/audio'. Now, /dev/audio (as well as /dev/audio1) exists, but it beats
me what's gone wrong.

I should point out that previously, when booting, as it flew by on the
display, that the 'sound' service was reporting that the device was busy. I
notice now that this is not the case.

The card is perfectly functional, working just fine under NT.

I have tried various IRQ and DMA settings, all to no avail :(

    Other potentially useful things:

2 x Parallel Ports: lpt on one, Zip (sda4) on the other.

Any advice will be gratefully received!

TIA

Does your kernel log offer more clues?
I had similar error messages with my sound card, and found out what the
problem was on a standard log check using the dmesg command

good luck---not sure this helps much but I thought that I'd mention it.

First try:
cat /dev/sndstat
(or cat /dev/sndstat | more )
to see if the devices are alive, if they aren't try
lsmod
(to see if sound has been loaded - it has to be a module for AWE cards)
if not loaded do
modprobe -a sound
then repeat the cat /dev/sndstat and the devices should be there and
the sample should play.

I had something like this when upgrading from 5.0.to 5.2, due to the
joystick driver hitting (in this case) the network card. The error was a
bit erratic, and didn't always do the same things, in fact it changed on
a power cycle.

I'd suggest you try two things. If the module you are using has a
joystick option, try joystick=0 as a parameter, and secondly, make sure
you haven't got anything at IO port 0x200, which is the normal joystick
port.

First try:
cat /dev/sndstat
(or cat /dev/sndstat | more )
to see if the devices are alive, if they aren't try
lsmod
(to see if sound has been loaded - it has to be a module for AWE cards)
if not loaded do
modprobe -a sound
then repeat the cat /dev/sndstat and the devices should be there and
the sample should play.

NOTE: You can't have sound support in the kernel, it has to be a module
and you can ony load it after running isapnp or some utility to setup the
PNP AWE32.
