The Gimp crashes X

Last night I fired up The Gimp for the first time in a few months (exam time,
so I figured now is a good time to get back to my web authoring :) ), but was
dissapointed to see it crash my X (and linux console).

It fired up OK, but as soon as I tried to load an image, or create a new one,
my xdm session died, and started I got the xdm login. CTRL-ALT-F1 resulted in
a screen flicker, and the VGA screen split into four. Still looking at the
(now dead) X display, I assumed I was on a VC, so logged in. Sure enough, the
hard disk showed a little activity, and a 'df' send it spinning.. only
a CTRL-ALT-DEL saved me.

System specifics:-
kernel 2.1.3
Xfree 3.2
libc-5.10
Xaw-Xpm	(also happened with the standard Xpm)
Gimp rel0.54

Hmm.. just realised, the crashes are similar to what happens with netscape.
(Except I don't think Netscape trashes the console) -- might try an older
libc, see what happens..

Any other thoughts would be appreciated though..
