Whenever I try to start XFree_W32 (I have an ET4000/W32P rev b with 
an ATT20c492 RAMDAC.  The monitor is a ViewMaster 15in with digital 
controls) I either get:

1. Screen makes the "switching-modes" noise, but goes entirely blank.
Sometimes killing the server will get me back to text mode, but
sometimes not, so I have to reboot to see anything.  (I assume that
everything is still "there", I just can't see it.)  This happens maybe
80% of the time.

2. X will come up: I get a blue screen and around it I get this sort of
grey colour (the same sort of colour you get when you turn up the
brightness of your monitor) - is this normal?  After using X for a little 
while (1-2 minutes), various weird things happen like: I get thin 
horizontal lines across the screen, the palette will change slightly 
and sometimes the whole screen fades so I can't see anything any more.  

As it is, X is quite unusable, which is particularly frustrating since I
picked the hardware to be X-compatible.  It happens with whatever screen
mode I try, even the VESA-standard ones.
