Anyone running Linux and X on an Amiga ?

Hello,

I'm wondering about getting an A1200 and hoping I can get Linux and X
Windows running on it alongside AmigaDOS. I realise I would need an
030 card and can't multitask the two OS's. (correct me if I'm wrong).

Does anyone have Linux & X running on any Amiga ?

Are you using AGA ? Can you use any colour depth up to 256 colours ?

If you are running it on an A1200, which 030 card do you
have/recommend ?

How compatible is it with PC Linux ? Does Netscape run properly ?

Thanks for any replies.

Regards,

Gary.

You can't run both AmigaOS and Linux/68k at the same time.

|> Does anyone have Linux & X running on any Amiga ?

Yes. I run it on my A4000/040.

|> Are you using AGA ? Can you use any colour depth up to 256 colours ?

Yes. From 2-256 colors. This requires a new frame buffer device and X server
that can be found on ftp://linux3.cc.kuleuven.ac.be/pub/Linux68k/.

|> How compatible is it with PC Linux ? Does Netscape run properly ?

It's _source_ code compatible (almost), i.e. most programs for Linux/386 can be
compiled on Linux/68k too.

There's no Netscape because Netscape Communications doesn't want to compile a
version for Linux/68k. They even don't reply if you ask them by E-mail. That's
what I call `good business and user support'.

But chimera works fine.

	You are not wrong.

No idea. Netscape would not run *FOR SURE* as *NO* Intel
binary would run-- this *IS* a different processor after all!!

You're right, Linux completely takes over the machine.

Yep, since around February of this year.

I believe the person who can best answer this will do so very soon. :-)
(Myself, I've been using in on monochrome ECS for the first few weeks until
I had hacked together rudimentary support for a gfx board of mine - which
has not evolved in any way since then.. :-|)

As far as X11 is concerned, there is no difference between X11R6 under
Linux/m68k, Linux/ix86 or any flavour of Unix running X11R6.

There is no Netscape because there is no source code for it - and I believe
Netscape Communications is not going to produce a Linux/m68k binary for
us...

imo netscape is just a pile of commercial shit.
(and they'll sue me for saying this, i bet)

fyi, currently i'm working on a m68k-linux port of arena (the cern ww
browser) that does all the fancy stuff netscape does, and is smaller
and faster. but, my current compiles have various bugs and are nto
stable :(

The problem is that the source of the latest version (Arena 0.97) isn't
available, AFAIK. Or maybe we should ask them to release a binary distribution
for Linux/68k? :-)

Errr... while I like arena very much (I maintain the NetBSD-m68k port when
my Amiga's NetBSD is working properly), it certainly does not do all the
stuff that Netscape does (yet!). It doesn't support forms yet for example
-- which is a major show stopper.

Arena is definitely not ready for prime-time yet, though it's great
hack-ware.
