i have just got xfree86 3.1.2 going on my machine (a pentium with a diamond stealth64 card) - everything is working but the mouse. its not that it freezes up, quite the opposite in fact - it is jumping around the screen all the time. for instance, if i try to move an xterm to a different part of the screen, it the cursor junps off the place i have selected and reappears in another part of the screen. the mouse is a microsoft "home" mouse, which i have called a "microsoft" mouse in my XF86Config file. i have tried another microsoft mouse - the larger "ergonomically" shaped version (forgotten what its called) - and it does the same thing in x. has anybody had the same troubles? thanks in advance

Sounds to me like a driver problem. The best thing to do is play aroung with gpm until you have your mouse working properly at the shell, put gpm in retransmit mode (-R), configure X to read from gpm and you're off to the races. gpm -h for more info. If the mouse has consistenly random movement (i.e., it never goes the way you tell it to) they you have probably incorrectly specified your mouse type in XF86Config. If it sometimes does the right thing, sometimes not, then you likely have another device conflicting with the IRQ or I/O ports of your mouse. - Mike
