funny messages when I open an xterm

I have Linux and Xfree86, slackware disribution.

When I open an xterm the following lines appear in it:

_setutent: Can't open utmp file: No such file or directory
_setutent: Can't open utmp file: No such file or directory
_setutent: Can't open utmp file: No such file or directory

the xterm window seems to work normally, but I find this a bit
off-putting, so I usuallly use rxvt.

Cheers,
David
