Compiling KDE, undefined reference to XUngrabServer ...

I am trying to compile KDE beta 1.2 on a Linux system (Unifix Linux 2.0,
kernel 2.0.28) with XFree86 v3.3. The kdesupport and kdelibs packages
have compiled successfully but I get a compilation error well into the
kdebase package:

/usr/lib/libXpm.so: undefined reference to `XUngrabServer'
/usr/lib/libXpm.so: undefined reference to `XGrabServer'
make[2]: *** [kbat.kss] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kdebase/kscreensaver'

I have looked in /usr/lib and libXpm.so points at libXpm.so.4.3. I can't
find a newer version of the Xpm library, any ideas how I can complete the
compilation? I suspect that I could bypass the screensavers and be OK but
I would prefer a clean compilation.
