I've got a TWINHEAD SL9T-166CZ (laptop) with Redhat 5.0. The X-Server is unable to start. He writes 'can't find valid mode'. I put the right values of the refresh rate of my LCD screen (detected by the XServer). I use the SVGA and VGA16 X-servers.I don't know what to do ? I need help !!!!!!!! I ahve got the same notebook and one thing you got to make sure is that you are running XFree86 3.2.x. Also, just set the LCD frequency at standard VGA initially so that you can at least get X-winodws going.. About hte invalid modes. You have to manually edit hte XF86Config file and adjust the mode lines so that it matches with the refresh rates for the LCD.
