X settings problems

Friend of mine has:

Monitor: Mitsubishi Diamond View 1772ie
Video Card: S3 Trio 3D/2X (2X AGP accel)

and, with Mandrake 7.0 (r2) we cant find the exact monitor listed, so we
selected "generic monitor". Now we get only basic 640x480 res (no other
options available in X-config) and the mouse pointer is a big square block
(ichh...)

SO:
1. Anyone know of monitor driver, or can we use a "similar" Mitsubishi
driver or something else?
2. Video card not listed on mdk or RH supported cards list (earlier S3 cards
are). Presumably this is where the biggest problem is. What do we do? Any
drivers? Or do we get another card for X?

Any help met with tearful thanks,

Marcus

In the list of monitors, was there one titled "generic multisync" or
something similar?

Your friend's monitor is most likely a multisync (it sounds like a recent
enough model), but check the monitor's manual before trying the "generic
multisync" option.

I'd expect the generic SVGA X server to support your friend's video card. If
you install Linux and SKIP the X configuration, you can then proceed with
everything else, connect to the Internet and look on mirror.aarnet.edu.au for
a newer X server for the card your friend has, install that and then run
Xconfigurator as root.
