Problem with ftp and telnet setup
#63

At the moment I'm trying to setup my own ftp server and telnet facility,
so I can send stuff to and fro from work. I've installed anonftp and
wuftp, and have checked that ftp services are provided in /etc/services.
However trying to connect via telnet from the host machine(ie telnetting
into my machine from my machine) to see if things work gives the
following stumper of a message: (BTW the host name is Medusa)

/home/users > telnet Medusa
Trying 0.0.0.0...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host

And trying localhost

/home/users > telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out

I'm not sure what it is, but I suspect it's my networking interfaces or
my hosts.deny file. Here's what I've got :

:::/etc/networks:::
loopback        127.0.0.0
localnet        0.0.0.0

:::/etc/hosts:::
127.0.0.1       localhost       loopback
0.0.0.0 Medusa.picknowl.com.au  Medusa

:::/etc/hosts.deny:::
ALL: ALL

:::/etc/ftphosts:::
ALL:LOCAL

BTW : this is doing telnet,ftp as user other than root.
ftp gives similar errors. I've set the machine up for ppp access to my
ISP, and my machine is not on a network.
It's a RH 5.1 , Kernel 2.0.34 with a Cyrix 686.

		Any help gratefully accepted,
						Matt.

I presume that this "0.0.0.0" is you blanking out your real IP for
newsgroup use? IF not, try one of the "private IPs" like
umm.. 10.0.0.1

>/home/users > telnet localhost

Ahem. Look very closely. Ask yourself.. "Who am I denying?"
Then check your hosts.allow.

Then re-read man hosts_access...

   Under Debian, at least, those lines should be contained in your
/etc/init.d/network file.

	The politeness level on this group is kinda scary. People ask
nicely, people politely answer and they are thanked.

	There is communication, comunity and - sheesh, people actually
being civilised. Is this a *real* newsgroup??

 		:-)

	I am sure it turns out that Linux is just such an advanced system,
it never makes people grumpy. Unlike ...
	:-)

I'd firstly like to thank those who offered suggestions. I found
the problem waas caused by two things. Firstly : looking at my logs I
found that it couldn't find /usr/sbin/tcpd , so I re-installed
tcp-wrappers, which fixed that problem no worries. The second one was
more problematic and I've only managed to solve, in a way that I have to
execute a set of commands from the shell each time I boot up linux. It
relates to bringing up the loopback network so I can telnet and ftp in.
	These commands are as follows :

      ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
      route add -host 127.0.0.1 lo

I assumed that my loopback device would already be up and running at
bootup, so I'm hoping someone can tell me how I can set this up, so I
don't have to type these commands each time I boot up linux.

			Any help gratefully accepted,

					Matt.

BTW : for those who asked my /etc/hosts.allow is as follows:
ALL: LOCAL

Isn't this the way we all *want* to communicate? I know I do :-)

It sure helps ;-)

However the Linux community, is to me, the *really* special thing about
Linux.

GNU Linux should work with 8MB of RAM. With X Windows your should have
at least 16 MB.
