Scenario...
You (somewhat stupidly) purchase an IBM laptop thinking 'now this'll
make a hell Linux box`, only to find that the bloody thing has a
NeoMagic video chipset, and that there is no driver (or info to help
write one) for the X server, so then you give up, install Windows on it,
palm it off to someone else and look for something better.
Lucky it was bought for where I work - so that I can palm it off,
otherwise I would be out of pocket....
Why do you not allow out of the box support for Linux. I know heaps of
people who would like to buy a machine with NeoMagic inside, but have
now decided against it because of the lack of support.

Sorry, this statement is wrong. There is a driver for neomagic chipsets. Check out http://www.xig.com. External/Internal switching supported (with different refresh rates), Power Saving modes and a lot of other nifty features. - Thomas -- Thomas Roell /\ An imperfect plan executed violently Xi Graphics / \/\ _ is far superior to a perfect plan. thomas@xig.com / / \ \ / Oelch! \ \ George Patton

I still cannot use the External/Internal switching feature (I called custumer support a lot of times). Also, I have a question for you: Does your server support the presence of a color index visual and 16 bit visual at the same time like in SGI and Metro-X. i.e, I would like to be able to display 256 color images and 16 bit color images without having to restart the server all the time. thanks, -- Abed M. There is only a VGA16 driver for 800x600 in XF86Free, since NeoMagic do not release their specs. BTW, IMHO the XiG Server seems to be very expensive ($200/$250). Volker

Are you using "CTRL+ALT+TAB" for switching ? > Also, I have a question for you: Does your server support the presence of > a color index visual and 16 bit visual at the same time like in SGI and > Metro-X. First off, Metro-X does not support this as far as I know. SGI supports it only on hardware that can do it. Same goes for Accelerated-X. And there only a few pieces of PC hardware can actually do it. > i.e, I would like to be able to display 256 color images and 16 bit color > images > without having to restart the server all the time. I'm doing expactly this here, except that I'm using 256 + 16M. - Thomas -- Thomas Roell /\ An imperfect plan executed violently Xi Graphics / \/\ _ is far superior to a perfect plan. thomas@xig.com / / \ \ / Oelch! \ \ George Patton

Aehm, the question was not whether there was support in XF86_SVGA for a Neomagic chip, the question was, whether there was support available at all. - Thomas -- Thomas Roell /\ An imperfect plan executed violently Xi Graphics / \/\ _ is far superior to a perfect plan. thomas@xig.com / / \ \ / Oelch! \ \ George Patton

I'd rather spend the extra $200 on a machine with an XFree86-supported chipset, or, better yet, find a comparably-priced non-NeoMagic machine and spend the $200 on a Global Positioning System receiver. That's the problem the notebook users have to face to. I hope, someone can write an XFree version for this chipset. The problem for me is not if the addtional $200, it's the support. Since Accelerated X is not widely used, people can't get enough information about it from the newsgroup. Of course, we can't require from Xi graphics to publish the specifications of NeoMagic chipset, because it's a commercial firm, has contract with NeoMagic, I only hope someone, who is capable, can do it. At the end, I think, it's just a question of time, when a XFree version support for NeoMagic comes, because there are more and more vendors using NeoMagic, like Dell, NEC, Gateway, Acer ... And compared with C&T, NeoMagic has better performace (Ref. I have a laptop with NeoMagic chipset as well, and I'm pretty much stuck with it. X hardly works on it; I can get something resembling 800x600 in 4bit colour but about 50-70 pixels to the right fall off the screen. NeoMagic is unsupported by XFree86, indeed. However, Quake (under DOS) does run well on this very same laptop. Quake can run in full 800x600, without shifting the display to the left or downwards, or any other problems. So if Quake can run on this chipset (seeing it as any ordinary SVGA compatible chipset) run so well, in 256 or more colours, why can't XFree86? Forget about the acceleration, I just want the bloody thing to RUN properly in 256 or more colours on 800x600! I know it should be possible with just some generic SVGA driver, Quake does it! How do I configure XFree86 for this? When I try to run the SVGA X Server it always reverts back to 320x200 (ARGH! SCREAM! RUN!) "generic vga" driver while it should be able to run some sort of "generic svga" driver! :-( --TNL

Sounds Like your best bet is to reinstall and set x without accelaration even if it means editing the xf config file by handmake a backup copy of the config and run xf86config not setup cant remember the capitalisation. This will ask you questions in a text mode without using a gui
