Hi all,

I have just uploaded an upgrade to my Windows Command Line
interface program (WCL v7.50) to various ftp sites. The file
you want is wincmd75.zip.

If you are currently evaluating an older version of WCL, you
should download this one. There are a number of important bug
fixes, internal enhancements, and some significant new features.

You can currently find the latest version in the following
places;

       site uploads directory
      -------- ------------------------------
   archive.umich.edu /msdos/UPLOADS/wincmd75.zip
   wuarchive.wustl.edu /pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS/win/wincmd75.zip
   ftp.cis.ksu.edu /pub/upload/wincmd75.zip
   ftp.catt.ncsu.edu /incoming/wincmd75.zip
   ftp.uu.net /tmp/wincmd75.zip

It has also been uploaded to;
 garbo.uwasa.fi
 oak.oakland.edu, and
 ftp.demon.co.uk

(they will make their own announcements of the location of the file
when they have updated their archives).

As for cica, I don't know what's up with the site.

Immediately below is a list of some of the new features in
version 7.50. This is followed by an introduction to WCL.

Changes/New Features
--------------------
1. New feature: the "small" WCL window can now be set to be always in
the foreground (by a new setting in WCL.INI = "TOPMOST-WINDOW=").
2. Enhanced support for networked users. Each user on a network can
now have his/her own WCL INI file, and KEYS file - this is implemented
   with a new command-line parameter.
3. New command "CFG" or "WCLCFG" has been introduced - when this
command is run, it loads the WCL configuration program, with access
to the correct user INI file.
4 New command "WCLMAP" - to MAP and UNMAP drives on a Novell Netware
network only. If you are not on a Netware.
5. New support for multiple commands on a single line, each separated by
   a semi-colon (";").
6. Bug in the implied CD feature fixed (when no matching directory was
found, the user was always dumped in the root directory).
7. New CLIPBOARD functionality
[a] contents of WCL window can be copied to the clipboard.
[b] new command "CLIP" introduced for this purpose.
[c] if you supply a file name as an argument to "CLIP", the
contents of that file get copied to the clipboard as text.
[d] the output of the DIR command can be redirected to the
clipboard, by supplying "CLIP" as the filename.
          e.g, "DIR *.EXE > CLIP"
8. New setting "SEARCH-DRIVE=" introduced in WCL.INI. This setting
determines whether the "implied CD" feature will search the whole
drive for any directory that is supplied at the WCL prompt.
9. New command "RUNHIDDEN" introduced - to run a program in a hidden
   state.
10. New command "EXITRUN" introduced - to close down Windows, run a DOS
program, and restart Windows again when you finish with the DOS
    program.
11. New command "MOVE" introduced - to move files from one place to
    another.

                INTRODUCTION TO WCL
                -------------------

The Windows/Win-OS/2 Command Line Processor (WCL) is a
Shareware program that presents a fully featured DOS-like
command line interface for Microsoft's Windows 3.1 and IBM's
Win-OS/2. It is an applications manager, file manager, and
system manager, which can either replace or supplement the
standard Windows Program and File Managers. However, all this
functionality in WCL is invoked from a Windows command prompt.

WCL basically simulates the DOS "C:\> prompt", but from within
Windows or Win-OS/2. The WCL main Window is a small, unobtrusive
window (about 50 characters wide and 4 lines deep) which defaults
to the top left corner of the screen, but which can be moved at
will. The window occupies very litte screen space, meaning that
most of the rest of the screen is visible. WCL also has a "big"
in which the main window is of full size, and all output is directed
to the main window. This is an almost exact imitation of the
"MSDOS prompt", but within a full Windows program.

WCL ensures that you do not need to open a DOS shell or the File
Manager, just to perform operations like file copying, directory
listing, file deletions, changing file attributes, etc., etc.
WCL, being a full Windows program, offers all the benefits of
Windows which will otherwise be lost in a DOS shell, and uses far
less memory than a DOS shell. But if you do want to open a DOS
shell, you can still do so from WCL by typing "SHELL", or "DOS".

You can run Windows and DOS programs by typing their names and
pressing <ENTER>, just as you would do at the DOS command line.
If you are running OS/2 version 2.1, then you can also run OS/2
programs from within WCL. Program files with the extension .COM,
.EXE, .BAT and .PIF can also be run from WCL.

WCL also supports most of the internal DOS commands (e.g., COPY,
DIR, CD, MD, RD, DEL, MOVE, REN, etc.), and some external DOS
commands (e.g., ATTRIB, PRINT, etc.) through built-in technology.
In addition to these, there are several commands internal to WCL,
and several extra features which are fully documented in the
extensive on-line help.

In addition to this, WCL has scores of internal commands of its
own, all designed to make Windows easier to use for the command
line aficionado. There are powerful commands like SEEK, COPYTREE,
and DELTREE. There is a TYPE-WRITE command that turns your PC into
an electric typewriter for line-by-line output to a line printer,
and loads of other goodies, like Unix-like aliases for commands,
and aliases for directories. There is a built-in line editor (which
is invoked by typing "COPY CON <filename>") for creating ASCII files
of up to 100 lines, without having to load NOTEPAD or any other text
editor.

Other features include UUencode, UUdecode, UNZIP, Filename
Completion, Implied CD, Directory Aliases, Command Aliases,
assignment of commands to Function Keys, Doskey emulation, batch
file operation within Windows, full command-line editing, a
FOREACH command, support for file extensions in WIN.INI, support
for various CLIPBOARD functions, and an interface for programmers
to hook into the WCL system and extend the internal command set.

With WCL, you can send messages to any active process (including
those that do not show up in the task list), telling the process
to hide its main window, close itself down, show itself, etc. You
can even change the title of any program's main window. You can
also run a program in a hidden state with the RUNHIDDEN command.
You can have a Windows AUTOEXEC batch file which WCL will run
each time Windows is started (if WCL is the Windows shell). You
can also have commands to be run each time WCL is loaded, by
using the STARTUP settings in WCL.INI.

WCL is fully compatible with environments such as OS/2, Windows
NT, Novell Netware (there is even a WCL "MAP" command to MAP
and unMAP Netware drives, from WCL), and PC-NFS. There is extra
support for networked users, whereby each user can have his/her
own separate WCL.INI file. WCL is also compatible with COMMAND.COM
replacements such as 4DOS. While 4DOS's unique features are not
duplicated by WCL, you can access them from WCL by using WCL's
RUNDOS or SPAWN commands.

WCL is a neat, fast, and effective way for multi-tasking under
Windows and Win-OS/2, and can replace the Program Manager as
your Windows or Win-OS/2 Shell. When WCL is used as the
Windows shell, it offers many extra facilities which can be
turned on or off in the initialization file WCL.INI. Among
these extra features are:
[a] saving the state of your Windows desktop when you quit
WCL, and restoring it to exactly the same state when you
next run Windows. This way, you can leave all your
favourite Windows programs running when you quit Windows
through WCL, and next time you run Windows, they will all
       be running still.
[b] backing up your WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files each time
Windows is started. This can save you from the deeds of
some badly behaved programs that mess up with the Windows
INI files. Two backup copies are made of each of these
files - the penultimate version, and the ante-penultimate
       version.
[c] running the programs in the "RUN=" and "LOAD=" lines in
       WIN.INI.

BATCH FILES
-----------
WCL supports batch file processing within Windows. Any file with
the extension .CBF is treated as a WCL batch file, and can
contain any mixture of program files and WCL internal commands.
A further feature of the batch file processing of WCL is support
for a Windows "AUTOEXEC" batch file. WCL will execute any commands
found in a WCL batch file with the name AUTOEXEC.CBF every time WCL
is run.
