I have Tex and LaTex files. How can a wordprocessor like Wordperfect, Word for Windows or Ami read these files?

How much it and WP, W4W and AmiPro are I'll leave up to you to decide, but I belive that Scientific Word from TCI can read "good" LaTeX documents and I -think- it has an RTF export option. As for the TeX stuff, you may have to convert it to LaTeX (do-able ??) so SciWord can handle it, import it as text and re-hash, or drop it. The decision depends upon how much you have to do, its "importance" and the value you place on your time. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Nick FitzGerald, PC Applications Consultant, CSC, Uni of Canterbury, N.Z. n.fitzgerald@csc.canterbury.ac.nz TEL:+64(3)364 2337, FAX:+64(3)364 2332

I spent what seemed like an eternity at my previous employer converting LaTeX files to WordPerfect 5.1 (the actual time spent was several months for a 200 page document but that included a significant re-write of the document). The only way I found to do it was manually: import each LaTex file as ASCII text into WP and then strip out all of the LaTeX commands while adding the right WP formatting. Boring, tedious, mind-numbing, uncreative,... If you hear of anything better, drop me a line (I still know some poor S.O.B.s there who would rather not have to do this kind of stuff). Dave There are utilities to strip latex commands from latex files. Alternatively, generate the dvi file, then use dvi2tty to get ASCII formatted text in approximately the right format. Would probably be a heck of a lot easier than recreating the format altogether. stan

Is the source to dvi2tty available? Could you enhance dvi2tty so that at least some of the more basic things (overall type of font, special characters, underlining, italics) get translated into WP codes? -- < Michael A. I don't think the translation to WP6.0 will be any more direct than to
WP5.1, but after the code is stripped off, the use of styles could make
the job go faster, particularly if one were to create a button bar that
had each style listed as a button. The styles could be open (click on this
style until a new one is needed) or paired (block the text and click on the
button to apply the style to the text). In the Windows version, due out
next week, one can set up a style then apply it by blocking text and clicking
the mouse button--no need to go to the button bar. Still tedious, but it
may be faster than in WP5.1. (If one set up a series of Alt-key macros
to apply the desired styles, then WP5.1's faster speed could get the job
done more quickly, particularly if one were familiar with using the alt and
control keys in conjunction with up, down, left, and right arrows for moving
through text.)
David Child, who envies no one who has to reformat files and often finds
it faster just to retype them
