I just checked out the MS IE5.01 Service Pack. What is 128 bit encryption?
Are there downsides to downloading this Service Pack from MS?

this is for broadband connections. If you have regular dialup you don't need
it.

Marshall,

It is a good idea to get the 128 bit encrytion. There are some secure sites
that will require it in order to transfer information (my online broker for
example). It has nothing whatsoever to do with broadband or dialup
connections. When you transfer data to a secure site, that data gets
encrypted (put into a mathematical code). The stronger the encryption, the
harder it is for anyone intercepting the signal to decipher it as the number
of possible combinations of code is orders of magnitude higher. The stronger
encryption is in no way disadveantageous, so go for it.

128 bit encryption is just a higher level of encryption for your browser.
Normally IE loads as a 40 bit or 56 bit depending on the version. You can
check your encryption by clicking on help and then click about internet
explorer. I have downloaded it numerous times without a hitch. If you are
doing any kind of on-line transaction or banking you might consider using it.
There is also a 128 bit encryption patch for dial-up networking. Hope this
helps.

Most online banking services require 128
bit encryption. And it has nothing to do
with broad band connections.:-) It is
just higher internet security for
business transactions.
Cheers,
John

There aren't any downsides. In fact, 128 bit encryption is necessary if you
access any secure sites, such as credit card accounts, bank account
information, etc.

Why not just ignore IE 5.01 and just go ahead and Download 5.5?
It's 128-bit

Umm no it allows you to use a 128bit session key while viewing websites
(using HTTPS). Amercia recently relaxed the export laws regarding these.
If you use highly secure pages like tele/online-banking then installing
this is a good idea.
