Hey, Just deleted the KAK virus and now tried to run Scan Disk. I shut down all other applications and the Scan keeps stopping, saying that something keeps writing to the disk so it must start again. Does anyone know what's happening here? Thanks, Marsh.

If I close them all down, Scandisc runs fine. But you seem to have addressed this. probably no help......but I suggest you look for programs that may have started from your startup group and are running in the background. Lotsa luck. Try quitting as many programs as possible with <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DEL> (end task). Not the explorer or systray... When this does not work, start your computer in save mode and run scandisk. You may want to run Scandisk either under *plain* dos or in *safe* mode. If you still experience problems in safe mode, the kak worm might not have been removed entirely. Hope that helps. -- d-d

Also, make sure you don't have your screensaver active "as it see's scandisk as idle time and may try to kick in" garry "Detlev Dreyer" <detdreyer@consultant.com> wrote in message news:39853D38.AE908F61@consultant.com... > Marsh wrote: > > > > Just deleted the KAK virus and now tried to run Scan Disk. I had the same trouble. Had done the ctrl alt del until only explore & systray was open. Then i disconnected my router for my DSL and scandisk worked fine.

hi! looking over some of the older post to your question. one of of the first
things i do before runing scan disk, disk cleanup, and disk defrag is first
right click on a blank area of your desktop(depending on what program you have
installed to allow you to do this). on mine, if i right click on a blank area
of the desktop, i have a list of options, one being screen saver, which allows
you to turn your screen saver off and on. click off until you do your typical
housekeeping chores on the pc.
you can do one of two things and either one has worked perfectly for me(never
needing to start in safe mode to do it). first, pay attention to what is
loading in your start up group. some programs you really don't need to have
start when windows starts. you can disable what you really don't need because
each peice of software that finds it's way into start up can be configured
manually from within that particular program...just untick in each of programs
options to not start when windows starts. of course most people will tell you
to hit ctrl+alt+del to close out all running apps or start-up apps except
systray and explorer. (remember that until each one closes out, there may a few
minutes in between in until all are closed out).
i have found that the simplest (and although you will need to remember to go
back and re-tick the start up group prior to rebooting) is...when i am
performing the typical housekeeping duties, i clean up what i don;t really want
or need...it's all in configuring each individual program, i then go to start,
run, and type in msconfig, and untick the line that says: load startup group
items and restart or reboot computer. then go and perform your system
tools...disk cleanup, scan disk, and disk defrag. this will move these right
along without starting and restopping.
when you finish this...remember to go back to start, run, type in msconfig, and
go to the the start-up tab. only tick the ones in start up that you really
need or want...and in particular the systray and explorer as well as the ones
you think of are importance. (too many startups and depending on the programs
aren't necessary and you can always start them manualy when you need to) too
many startup group items can chew resources and add some conflicts later on.)
before exiting msconfig, make sure on the general tab that "load start-up
group" is reticked, reboot and hopefully you will get through your system tool
housecleaning without a hitch.
recommended this to many and am happy to report that all say that they haven't
had any more problems with starting, restopping, and never seeming to finish.
good luck and let me know if this works! take care...Dee
p.s depending on the anti-virus program you are using...the purpose of a a
rescue disk you create in say a program like norton anti-virus is to help you
eliminated a suspected virus by using the rescue disks. whenever you update
virus definitions...you should always take a few minutes and update your rescue
disks as well as periodically create at least two windows emergency start-up
disks which can be created using the add/remove programs in control panel.
there is a tab to create a new disk. (i do this each time i update my
anti-virus rescue disks)
another piece of advice....after you have created a windows EBD or emergency
boot disk....keep the floppy in the drive, go to find files and folders, and on
your main drive (usually C) search and send to: a:\floppy the following files
directly on the EBD...
FIDISK.EXE (sometimes you can use the following command: FDISK.EXE /MBR
(remember the space after fdisk.exe before the /)
FORMAT.COM
EDIT.COM
EMM386.EXE
COMAND.COM
HIMEM.SYS
there is more info here than what i intended...but it's always a good idea to
add these also to your windows emergency start-up disk. (in case you ever need
to boot with the floppy in to attempt to get back to windows)
good luck and basically my post is to keep you prepared in the case of an
emergency! take care...Dee

Scan Disk keeps restarting when I do it as well... every few minutes... has a hard job finishing in fact. I tried exiting from the virus checker before starting it, and that reduced the interruptions sufficiently to allow it to finish. Wouldn't dare attempt a thorough scan tho. Damn thing would be there all week trying :-( SoleBanana phaedrus@ultra.net.au wrote: > On Tue, 8 Aug 2000 12:25:15 -0400, "Ameta" <sales@aiicomputer.com> > wrote: > > >Hey Marsh, > >we have the same problem here, but how did you delet that KAT file? > > > >please reply ASAP > > > > > > > >Marsh <mtwilk@ozemail.com.au> wrote in message > >news:xB9h5.58862$N4.1802678@ozemail.com.au... > >> Hey, > >> > >> Just deleted the KAK virus and now tried to run Scan Disk.
