REGISTRY ERRORS

I'm getting registry errors while using win95+98. The error is 'Windows
has discovered an error with your registry. Windows will shut down and
restore a previously saved registry". There is only an OK box which
shuts windows down and restarts with an old registry, something like 20
start ups old.

This is a new system and this error has occured from the start and
happens during the running of other applications eg. while saving during
word. The system has been formatted and rebuilt twice firstly with
win95 then win98 with the same result. Scan disk could find no errors
with the hard disk. PC cillian was running the first time but was not
installed during consequtive installs.

If anyone can suggest a possible solution please forward to
maz@hotkey.net.au.

Thanks
Mark

What you describe is almost always a memory error. Check you memory chips.
(pull a pair, if possible, or swap with known good memory). Odds are better
than 99% that will clear your problem. With luck, you won't have to
reinstall again, but don't count on that.

This type of error usually is a result of after re-installing WIndows, you
try to copy to the windows directory the configuration of old windows
applications. The registry is then completely lost. If you have
re-installed windows from scratch or if you installed it in a different
directory, you have no choice but re-installing all your windows
applications. Copy them back to the folder will just results in the type of
problems you are talking about.

If you haven't done that then sorry but I cannot help.

Sounds very like hardware problems in the RAM subsystem (RAM SIMMs or
DIMMs, cache, mobo).

Suspect this especially if you are overclocking, running a motherboard
at a base speed above its rating (e.g. any Intel Socket 7 chipset over
66MHz, typically with 686 processors), have a remarked processor
(involuntary overclocking), have non-PC100 SDRAM running at 100MHz, a
stuck processor fan, or are a PC Chips victim ;-)

Suspect this also if you are overclocking the PCI bus, typically when
running a base speed of 75 or 83MHz on a mobo that derives PCI clock
using a fixed 2:1 divisor off the CPU base clock. This applies to all
Intel Socket 7 motherboard chipsets and is common on 686 systems.

I think that advice has to be situational, rather than generic.

Was this about 2-3 years ago, when "486DXn or Pentium-100?" was the
question? In those days, EDO cost more, and several price heroes were
boasting "Fast Page Memory!!" to save (them) money.

Yep, FPM is slower.

In my experience, mobos that pre-date EDO will NOT work with it, but
EDO-capable mobos will work with FPM - as long as you don't mix FPM
and EDO within the same bank.

There are also issues concerning mixtures of form factors and
voltages. Generally, 8-bit and 32-bit SIMMs often can't be used at
the same time, SDRAM DIMM and EDO SIMMs can't be used at the same
time, and 3.3v DIMM cannot be used with SIMMs as the latters' 5v data
signals can blow the former (if not 5v-tolerant).

Memory isn't quite as generic as one might expect; some "lame bland"
systems can't even use standard RAM (requiring proprietary stuff, even
when the form factor is identical), and several mobos have fine print
on single- vs. double-sided SIMMs, whether the higher-capacity SIMMs
should go in the higher or lower banks, whether you can use a bank of
2-chip SIMMs with a bank of 9-chip SIMMs, etc.

It's no wonder that folks get superstitious about RAM; "never mix
SIMMs from different vendors or batch numbers" and all that.

;-)

BTW I never really understood the single-sided vs. double-sided SIMM
thing, except that it isn't about chips on both sides of the board or
the SIMM edge contacts being split up (corresponding contacts on both
sides are joined within the socket anyway, which is why they are SIMMs
and not DIMMs). Explanations welcome, please!

I find that as soon as my registry gets to about 2.8 meg big, I start
getting that error to. The only solution is to try and clear it out or
format and reinstall windows.
