WINDOWS 98/ATi GRAPHICS CARDS : A MYSTERY!

I recently downloaded some security patches and the Critical Update
Notification from the Microsoft Windows update site.
After re-booting, all images (graphics, text, icons) displayed on the
desktop appear "out of register": i.e. as a printed page would if the 3
colours were not accurately laid on top of each other.
Mysteriously this ONLY applies to desktop: within actual operating
programs text and graphics appear as normal.
I have tried every combination of controls via Windows, the graphics
card controller and the monitor with no success. It may or may not be
significant that the monitor driver ("Plug and Play Monitor) now carries
the date of the Windows update, though trying other drivers has had no
effect.
Has anyone come across this phenomenon? Does anyone have a cure?
System is PII 400, ATi Xpert 98 8mb card, ADi 5GT p+p monitor.
TIA,

Try some 3-D glasses - maybe you found a new switch for a 3-D desktop :-) -- Andrew Gabriel Consultant Software Engineer

Dunno. But as I have this card and a similar kit (Dell 450 and monitor), I'd welcome what to avoid. I'm already a bit pissed off that this ATI card does not have the depth of support software that came with the Expert@work on my old machine. That allowed me to go into settings to alter things like screen position and colour mix. -- David Lawson - London
