Advice on mixing BNC and UTP on same network

Hi

I have a network consisting of 7 workstations and a server on thin
Ethernet/BNC.

I am considering getting some new machines and want to move to UTP cat5
RJ45 in future.

Will I be able to get a Hub with (say) 8 RJ45's and one BNC connector
and simply plug and go, or do I need a bridge or switch to do this.

(Win NT3.51 server '95 workstations, NetBEUI)

Yes, most 3com hubs support that -- 8 to 12 UTPs and one AUI port. You need
a transceiver to connect your thin-net to the hub.

Cheers!

No, a cheap hub will do this. A lot of them have a BNC connector, or you
can use an AUI port with a transceiver (I'm told, I've never done it).
You will, of course, be limited to 10MHz. It's still worth using CAT 5
cabling throughout, so that you can take the network to 100MHz without
recabling.

Look for hubs, or more likely switches, with a 100MHz uplink. It will
help you introduce 100MHz piecemeal later.

3Com do a very nice one at a reasonable price - just under 100UKP
IIRC. I have one and it works well. Nice set of diagnostic LEDs as
well.

Just plug it up, with the usual care for terminators on the BNC
part.

           Harry.

Clarification:

I only want to connect the new machines to the Hub, and keep the others
on Thin Ethernet.
