Invoking some commands between clicking on an icon & the app starting.

Is there some way to get some commands carried out between clicking on
a Windows app icon and the .exe file for that app executing?

Example: Map a Novell drive letter to a particular CD ROM before the
exe file associated with that CD starts.

I've read up about PIF files but they seem only to be for
starting/running non-Windows apps from Windows.

Yes. There is a Windows Batch language, Winbatch that does this very well.

You can read all about it at our Web site

For carrying out commands in general, there are several Windows batch
languages, e.g. WilsonWare.

If you are specifically interested in mapping drives, Birch Grove
Software has a product called LinkLaunch that is for this purpose. It
does some things that are difficult or impossible to do with a batch
language.

Demos are available upon request.
