I am posting this for a friend. He runs an office currently set up as follows: 7 stations, 1 server 1st floor: 4 stations, 1 printer (shared by 2 stations) 2nd floor: Server, 1 station, 1 printer shared with 1 3rd floor station 3rd floor: 3 stations, 1 printer shared by 2 stations, other station sharing 2nd fl printer Novell network: pre 3.12 Thomas Conrad Arcnet Network cards Coax cable This office does word processing primarily, using WordPerfect(DOS), and billing, currently shared by 3 stations, but could be done by one. Security is not an issue, nor is in-office memo capabilities. They are on a strict budget, but recognize the need to upgrade their stations. All stations are to go 'Windows'. Currently, there are no Pentium machines, and 2 486 portables with docking stations. There are 2 'power' users, 2 'mid' users, and 4 minimal users. The minimal users do only word processing and billing. The intent is to have an internet home page for read-only info. All e-mail with be directed to individual AOL or CIS addresses. The owner is wondering if they could go without networking, or use the existing coax cable for a Windows network. They do an absolute minimum of file sharing, but would need to share printers. Backup would be an issue. Thanks for any assistance. BTW, their budget demands that they drastically cut computer consult fees.
