W95 to WFWG 3.11 Peer Networking????

I have just upgraded one of my systems on a WFWG 3.11 network to W95. The system has a Digital Turbo 3 network card installed (as it did under 3.11) and according to the system info it is installed and working. I am unfamilar with the networking side of W95. Why can't I see the other nodes on the network and vice-versa? Where are the "connect drive" etc that there were under 3.11? In fact, there seems very little under W95.. Please advise... -- David Longley

You need to select Network Neighborhood/Properties to bring up the Network configuration panel. On this you need to select Add... and then add the drivers for Client for MS Networks, File and printer sharing for MS networks and the NetBEUI protocol. Once you have done this you connect to a WFWG directory in Explorer by selecting Tools/Map Network Drive. You will have to explicitly specify the logical path (including the computer name) of the directory you wish to connect to. I theory one should also be able to connect to a shared Windows 95 directory from the WFWG machines using the usual techniques. However, I have been unable to get my WFWG machine to see my W95 machine. I would be interested to hear of your experience. Mike _________________________ Michael Humberston

Try right-clicking each drive on the W95 machine and setting the sharing
option ..... really, David, I don't think you try .....

There just do not sem to be enough IRQs to go around under W95. Devices are "floating" and leading to all kinds of odd effects. On top of that, the SCSI AHA2940 card is not working properly (a known problem for the AHA2940/2940U and resident W95 drivers, I have downloaded the new ones which has only partially solved that). I think it may be that W95 is more picky about getting these conflicts sorted out than WFWG.... System: P166, Endeavour Board PCI Matrox Millenium PCI PCI Miro DC20 PCI PCI AHA2940/2940U ISA Digital Turbo 3 ISA ? Vibra 16 Sound Card The problem is getting the Digital Network Card to work reliably with everything else. I can't use IRQ 5 (Vibra) or 10 (AHA2940) and although 15 is available theoretically, the Endeavour Board has two IDE channels using IRQ 14 and 15 so choosing 15 leads to an error 9, IRQ conflict. If anyone knows of a sure way of getting these 5 working togther, please let me know. I have tried P&P in the AMIBIOS setup, and I have tried allocating various IRQs in manual mode to either the vibra or Digital card. In the end, the system getts so choked that the Miro card tries to share and IRQ with the mouse on COM 2 - forcing me to clear NVRAM and start again. -- David Longley

You'll also need to go into network - properties - IPX/SPX -
properties - click advanced tab and change Frames from 'Auto' to
Ethernet 802.3. Until I did this, my 95 machines would intermitantly
talk to WFW. Its bullet proof now.

I sympathise, but I've always managed to get enough IRQs to go around,
even on fairly heavily loaded W95 machines. A printout from MSD or similar
and a little experimentation usually seems to do the job. I think you
have a compound problem in that you're not sure about a) whether the
hardware is working and b) what to do with W95 when it is ....

There are still 5 unknown devices hanging off a ? in SYSTEM though. I reckon they are all the SCSI devices....Shouldn't they be hanging down off the AHA2940? -- David Longley
