It's 10 Nov 97 14:35:57,
We'll return to dlnorris@worldnet.att.net and All's
discussion of SIMPLE peer to peer network on NT 4.0 workstation

dl> I need to be able to transfer files back and forth between 2 machines.
dl> Both run NT 4.0 Workstation.

dl> Microsoft's NT manual isn't a whole lot of help.

dl> Anyone know where I can find a source of instructions for MINIMUM
dl> settings required on both machines - especially with an eye toward
dl> mimimum amount of administrative stuff?

Here's a short list. :-)

1. Install a network card in each machine and configure it in Control
Panel -> Network -> Adaptors. Link the two with a crossover cable.
(You'll need to login as Administrator to configure networking.

2. Select a protocol. For a simple 2 machine LAN, I suggest NetBEUI,
it's fast on a network this small and requires no configuration.

3. Ensure that the Server and Workstation services are listed under
Services.

4. In Identification, assign each machine a unique name and set them up
to join a workgroup. Use the same workgroup night on both machines.

Close the Network applet and reboot when prompted.

Login as Administrator and run User Manager for Domains.

Create a user account on each machine for each user who needs network
access. The user ID and password must be the same on both workstations.

Now you can login as yourself and map drives using Network Neighbourhood
or Explorer. Copying files will then be the same as between local
drives.

Good luck. :-)

... just a few bytes short of a nul file.
